Why open source
Proprietary vendors license you access to your own patients' data. OpenEMR is licensed under the General Public License: the source code is public, the schema is open, and your data is yours without permission, penalty or negotiation.
We host on UK or EU infrastructure, and work across the United Kingdom and the European Union. A public health service should never depend on a decision made outside its own jurisdiction.
What you fund, everyone gets
Pay a proprietary vendor to build you a feature and you have bought a feature. Fund the same work here and we push it upstream into OpenEMR, where it reaches every other service running the platform, including ones with no development budget at all.
It runs both ways. Your instance already carries work paid for by services you will never meet. You are not buying software. You are joining a commons and helping to maintain it.
